James Rodriguez Stars as Colombia Beat Paraguay 2-1 in Copa America Opener

James Rodriguez delivered a vintage performance to propel Colombia to a 2-1 victory over Paraguay in their Copa America opener in Houston on Monday. The match, held at NRG Stadium, saw Rodriguez, who has had a tumultuous club career since his rise to fame at the 2014 World Cup, create both goals for Colombia in a well-deserved Group D win.

First Half Dominance

Rodriguez, despite limited playing time for Brazilian club Sao Paulo in the months leading up to the tournament, showed his class by setting up the opening goal in the 32nd minute. Finding space on the left flank, Rodriguez delivered a precise cross to the far post where Daniel Munoz headed firmly past Paraguay goalkeeper Rodrigo Morinigo to give Colombia a 1-0 lead.

Just ten minutes later, Rodriguez was at it again, this time from a set piece. His wicked free-kick from the right flank found Crystal Palace midfielder Jefferson Lerma, who glanced the ball into the net, doubling Colombia’s lead and putting them in control at half-time.

Nervy Second Half

While Colombia continued to dominate and create chances in the second half, Paraguay managed to pull a goal back in the 69th minute. Brighton and Hove Albion’s Julio Enciso capitalized on slack marking to volley Ramon Sosa’s cross into the bottom corner, making it 2-1 and setting up a tense finish.

Despite Paraguay’s goal, Colombia remained the more threatening side. They almost secured a penalty in the 84th minute when Yerry Mina appeared to be fouled by Gustavo Velazquez in the box. However, after a VAR review, the Argentinian referee Dario Herrera overturned the decision.
