Manchester United’s worrying slide towards the Premier League relegation zone has prompted head coach Ruben Amorim to adopt a damage-limitation approach, admitting that the Red Devils must “just survive” during this challenging period.
Thursday’s 2-1 defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers, which saw United reduced to 10 men, has left the Old Trafford outfit just seven points above the bottom three. With five losses in their last seven matches, Amorim’s team is facing a daunting task to arrest their decline.
When asked about the threat of relegation, Amorim acknowledged that United’s primary objective is to stay afloat. “In this moment, we just have to survive and to win sometimes, to work on the team,” he said. “We already knew it, when I started this job and started with the team, the new idea of no time to train, a lot of games, tough games, we already knew it, it’s a long journey, like I said in the first day we have to continue and we have to fight these bad moments because this is part of football.”
Amorim’s appointment as Erik ten Hag’s successor had raised hopes of a United revival, but so far, the team’s fortunes have continued to deteriorate. However, with a seven-point gap separating them from both the top six and the relegation zone, there is still time for Amorim to turn things around.
United’s next opportunity to halt their slide comes on Monday, when they host in-form Newcastle United at Old Trafford in the Premier League.
