Amorim Hints Maguire Could Take Captaincy

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has praised Harry Maguire’s professionalism and hinted that the England defender could take over the captaincy in Bruno Fernandes’ absence. Fernandes was sent off against Wolves and will miss United’s upcoming fixture against Newcastle United, sparking speculation over who will lead the team out at Old Trafford.

Amorim has been impressed with Maguire’s focus and dedication, despite the defender facing criticism for his performances. The head coach told reporters: “He’s working really well. He’s focused on the job, not what people say. He has no excuses – even if he’s had some tough moments. In that respect, he’s an example. He’s there to play to help the team and he’s trying to do that.”

Amorim’s comments have sparked speculation that Maguire could be handed the captain’s armband against Newcastle. The 31-year-old has been a mainstay of United’s defence, despite facing criticism, and Amorim has previously described him as “perfect” in a back three.

United are in desperate need of a win, having secured just one victory in their last five games. They currently sit 14th in the Premier League table, and Amorim will be hoping that Maguire can lead by example and help inspire a much-needed win against in-form Newcastle on Monday night.
