Mats Hummels expressed his disappointment at not being selected for the German national team’s Euro 2024 squad by coach Julian Nagelsmann, citing “age-related things” as the reason for his exclusion. Despite an impressive season with Borussia Dortmund, including a crucial goal against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, Hummels, 35, was left out of the squad.
In an interview with Sport Bild, Hummels revealed that his conversation with Nagelsmann regarding the decision was brief, lasting less than two minutes. He acknowledged the importance of team cohesion but maintained that his performance and experience should have earned him a place in the squad.
“I’m currently one of the five best defenders in Germany. I have the self-confidence to say that,” Hummels stated, expressing his belief that his recent form should have merited inclusion.
This is not the first time Hummels has faced disappointment regarding national team selection, having been previously omitted by Joachim Löw in 2019 before being reinstated. Germany will kick off their Euro 2024 campaign against Scotland on June 3 without Hummels, who will be watching from the sidelines despite his desire to represent his country.
