Jordan Pickford Faces Criticism Despite Consistent England Selection

Pickford’s Steady Role as England’s Number One

Jordan Pickford, aged 30, has maintained his position as Gareth Southgate’s first-choice goalkeeper since making his debut for England in November 2017. He started in goal for England’s fourth consecutive major tournament when they face Serbia on Sunday evening.

The Everton goalkeeper enters Euro 2024 on the back of an impressive Premier League campaign, boasting 13 clean sheets, a tally only surpassed by Arsenal’s David Raya. His solid performances for Everton have reinforced his credentials on the international stage.

Criticism of Pickford’s Temperament

Despite his achievements, Pickford has come under scrutiny from former Liverpool midfielder and German international Hamann. Speaking on the ‘In The Zone’ podcast, Hamann expressed concerns about Pickford’s temperament, suggesting it could be a liability in a tournament setting where setbacks are inevitable.

“My worry would be Jordan Pickford,” Hamann remarked. “He’s a good keeper, but I think his temperament lets him down at times. In a tournament when you might play seven games, you need a keeper who calms his teammates down. I think Pickford does the opposite.”

Comparison with Other Goalkeepers

Hamann’s critique parallels sentiments expressed by Liverpool legend Graeme Souness, who advocated for the inclusion of Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland over Pickford, Aaron Ramsdale (Arsenal), and Dean Henderson (Crystal Palace).

“Gareth has been very loyal to Jordan Pickford, which I understand, but I believe there’s another goalkeeper who should be in the squad,” Souness wrote in the Daily Mail. “I’ve watched Jack Butland playing for Rangers this season, and he is the best English goalkeeper around. I’m surprised he hasn’t earned a place.”

Additional Criticism Aimed at Declan Rice

Hamann also took aim at Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice, questioning his status as the best central midfielder in the Premier League compared to players like Rodri of Manchester City.

“People tell me Declan Rice is the best centre midfielder in the Premier League, but I don’t think he’s anywhere near Rodri,” Hamann stated.

Expectations for England’s Euro 2024 Campaign

Despite criticism, Pickford remains pivotal to England’s ambitions in Euro 2024, with their opening match against Serbia set to reveal how he handles the pressures of tournament football. As England seeks to make a mark on the European stage, Pickford’s performance will be closely scrutinized by fans and pundits alike.
