Neville Blasts Tierney After Scotland’s Euro 2024 Humiliation

Scotland’s Crushing Defeat to Germany

Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney faced criticism from Gary Neville following Scotland’s harrowing 5-1 defeat to Germany in their Euro 2024 clash. This heavy loss, nearly the worst in Euros history, saw the Scots overwhelmed by the hosts on Friday night. Goals from Florian Wirtz, Jamal Musiala, Kai Havertz, Niclas Fullkrug, and Emre Can secured Germany’s most significant victory in the tournament’s history.

The situation deteriorated further for Scotland with the dismissal of Ryan Porteous. The Watford defender received a first-half red card for a foul on Ilkay Gundogan, resulting in a penalty that compounded Scotland’s misery.

Neville’s Critique of Tierney’s Conduct

Former England and Manchester United defender Gary Neville singled out Kieran Tierney for his conduct during the match. Neville accused Tierney of “getting carried away” early in the game after celebrating a goal-kick win with Liverpool’s Andy Robertson.

“They were getting caught up in the first five minutes,” Neville said on ITV. “A significant moment was when Kieran Tierney, playing for Arsenal, celebrated winning a goal kick like it was the last minute of the game.”

Neville voiced his concerns, stating, “I just thought, ‘oh no’. This is a marathon, this match. You have such a long way to go, and this isn’t a moment to get carried away. I don’t think that would have helped the more junior players in that squad to settle down.”

Despite the humiliating defeat at the Allianz Arena, Scotland still has a chance to progress to the knockout stages of the Euros, with crucial group games against Switzerland and Hungary ahead.

Tierney’s Uncertain Future at Arsenal

Kieran Tierney, who has made over 100 appearances for Arsenal, may be nearing the end of his tenure at the club. The 27-year-old spent last season on loan at La Liga side Real Sociedad and has hinted that his future likely lies away from North London.

When asked about his future, Tierney told The Athletic, “There is every chance. Look at the squad depth in that position now. They have Zinchenko, Timber, Tomiyasu, Kiwior. Four players can play there.”

Tierney acknowledged the fierce competition and said, “If I go back and it’s the same as before then I’m not silly, I know the chances are I’ll be leaving. But you never know in football. You get the rare case with [William] Saliba, where he came back after a couple of good seasons [out on loan] but you don’t see it too often with someone who has played for four years, left, and then come back to play again. Stranger things have happened. I could go back and there is a place for me. So I’m prepared for both.”
