Pitch Invasion and Object Throwing Mar Albania vs. Italy Match
UEFA has initiated disciplinary proceedings against Albania following disruptive incidents during their Euro 2024 clash with Italy in Dortmund on Saturday. The match, which Italy won 2-1, was overshadowed by a pitch invasion and objects being thrown from the stands, primarily from the section housing Albanian supporters. Additionally, a smoke bomb was set off after Albania’s Nedim Bajrami scored just 23 seconds into the game, setting a new European Championships record.
Provocative Message and Fireworks Display Under Scrutiny
Alongside the pitch invasion and object throwing, UEFA reported that disciplinary action is also being taken over the lighting of fireworks and the display of “a provocative message unfit for a sports event.” UEFA has not clarified the content of the message. The matter will be reviewed by UEFA’s Control, Ethics, and Disciplinary Body (CEDB). Despite the incidents, Albania’s place in the tournament is not considered to be at risk. They are scheduled to face Croatia in Hamburg on Wednesday and Spain in Dusseldorf next Monday.
Albanian FA’s Response and Security Measures
The Albanian FA has stated its intention to submit a detailed statement to the CEDB. A spokesperson emphasized that “all necessary measures were taken to ensure the successful organisation of the match,” describing the event as a celebration of European football without any major incidents detracting from the positive atmosphere.

Fan Behavior and Security Concerns
Approximately 50,000 Albanian fans attended the game, turning Signal-Iduna Park into a sea of red. While the majority of fans maintained a peaceful atmosphere, reports emerged of black-shirted hooligans attacking Italy supporters at a fast-food restaurant. Riot police swiftly intervened to control the disorder. A substantial security presence, including police helicopters and drones, was in place for the match between these neighboring countries.
Match Outcome and Upcoming Fixtures
After conceding an early goal, Italy bounced back with goals from Alessandro Bastoni and Nicolo Barella to secure the victory. Italy is set to face Spain in Gelsenkirchen on Thursday. Meanwhile, Albania will look to bounce back in their upcoming matches against Croatia and Spain as they continue their Euro 2024 campaign.
