Serbia Threatens to Quit Euro 2024 Amid Alleged Offensive Chants by Croatia and Albania Fans

Background:

Serbia has issued a stern warning to UEFA, threatening to withdraw from Euro 2024 if appropriate action is not taken against Croatia and Albania for alleged offensive chants during their match in Hamburg. The game ended in a 2-2 draw, but the behavior of some fans has sparked significant controversy.

Serbia’s Stance:

Jovan Surbatovic, the general secretary of the Football Association of Serbia, emphasized the gravity of the situation. Speaking to Serbia’s state broadcaster RTS, he declared that Serbia might exit the tournament unless UEFA imposes severe penalties on the football federations of Croatia and Albania.

Jovan Surbatovic: “What happened is scandalous and we will ask UEFA for sanctions, even if it means not continuing the competition. We will demand from UEFA to punish the federations of both selections. We do not want to participate in that, but if UEFA does not punish them, we will think how we will proceed.”

UEFA’s Response and Ongoing Investigations:

UEFA has already taken some action in related incidents. The media credentials of Kosovar journalist Arlind Sadiku were revoked for allegedly making a nationalist gesture towards Serbia fans during their game against England. UEFA confirmed the decision, citing misconduct.

UEFA Statement: “UEFA can confirm that one journalist has had his accreditation cancelled due to misconduct at the UEFA EURO 2024 match between Serbia and England on 16 June 2024.”

Additionally, the Serbian Football Association faces charges for displaying a provocative banner and throwing objects during their match against England. This follows a complaint from the Kosovo Football Federation regarding “political, chauvinistic, and racist messages” from Serbian fans during the game

Surbatovic’s Comments on the Charges: “We were punished for isolated cases and our fans behaved much better than the others. One fan was punished for racist insults and we don’t want it to be attributed to others. We Serbs are gentlemen and we have an open heart.”

Upcoming Matches and Potential Implications:

Serbia is set to play their second Group C match against Slovenia in Munich on Thursday. The outcome of UEFA’s decisions could have significant implications for Serbia’s participation in the tournament. Surbatovic’s ultimatum puts pressure on UEFA to address the grievances and maintain the integrity of Euro 2024.

The situation highlights the tensions and sensitivities in international football, particularly involving historical and political rivalries. As Serbia awaits UEFA’s response, the governing body’s actions will be crucial in determining the course of the tournament and ensuring a fair and respectful competition environment.
