Man United Miss Out on Onana as Midfielder Chooses Aston Villa in £50M Deal

Manchester United’s late attempt to sign Everton midfielder Amadou Onana has been unsuccessful, according to reports from Belgium. Aston Villa have secured the midfielder in a £50 million deal, including potential add-ons and a sell-on clause.

Villa’s Transfer Activity

Aston Villa have been active in the transfer market, making seven new signings, including central midfielders Ross Barkley from Luton Town and Enzo Barrenechea from Juventus. The club also sold Douglas Luiz to Juventus for €50 million (£42.3 million).

Onana’s Decision and Contract Details

Villa agreed to pay £45 million upfront for Onana, with an additional £5 million in potential add-ons and a 10 percent sell-on clause. Onana has signed a five-year contract with Villa and is set to undergo a medical after cutting short his holiday post-Belgium’s Euro 2024 campaign.

Manchester United’s Attempt and Future Plans

Despite matching Villa’s offer and proposing better personal terms, Onana declined Manchester United’s approach, honoring his commitment to Villa manager Unai Emery. United, having secured Lille centre-back Leny Yoro for £52 million, are now focusing on Paris Saint-Germain’s defensive midfielder Manuel Ugarte. While personal terms have been agreed with Ugarte, United and PSG are yet to reach a consensus on the transfer fee, with PSG holding out for €70 million (£58.9 million).
