The Transfer Deal
Despite the recent transfer of Mason Greenwood to Marseille appearing to mark the end of his tumultuous tenure with Manchester United, new details have emerged that complicate the narrative. According to reports from the Telegraph, Greenwood’s deal includes a buy-back clause. Greenwood signed a five-year contract with Marseille last week, with the French club agreeing to pay United £26.6 million for the 22-year-old striker.
Greenwood’s Journey and Controversial Past
Greenwood, who spent last season on loan with Getafe, contributing to 14 goals in La Liga, has faced significant off-field issues. In October 2022, he was charged with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behavior, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. These charges were dropped in February 2023 by the Crown Prosecution Service due to the withdrawal of key witnesses and new evidence that undermined the case. Despite the legal resolution, the controversy surrounding Greenwood persisted, leading Manchester United to decide he would not play for the club again.
The Buy-Back Clause
The inclusion of a buy-back clause in Greenwood’s contract with Marseille has raised eyebrows. Such clauses are common for young players, allowing their original clubs the option to re-sign them if they perform well. However, given Greenwood’s history, the decision is seen as contentious. The Telegraph reports that while there is no expectation for Greenwood to return to Manchester United, the clause keeps a slim possibility open. More significant is the 50% sell-on clause, indicating that United believes Greenwood could eventually move to a top club outside the Premier League.
Greenwood’s New Chapter
At his first press conference as a Marseille player, Greenwood emphasized his desire to focus on football and not dwell on the past. “I understand the questions, I don’t want to talk about it too much or get into debates and controversies,” he stated. “My intention is really to concentrate on the football part. The staff and players told me about the foundation, associations, and hospital visits, and like the other players, I will participate in these initiatives.”
Marseille’s Support
Marseille president Pablo Longoria, who joined Greenwood at the press conference, acknowledged the concerns surrounding the striker’s past but expressed confidence in his character and potential. “I understand that his arrival raises questions and concerns. I respect everyone’s opinions but I do not want to get into controversy. It is the past, a complex and old situation. Mason has spoken about it,” Longoria said. “We are talking about the future. He has all the values that we want to develop in the club like all his teammates who are here and those who will arrive.”
Greenwood’s move to Marseille marks a new chapter in his career, but the inclusion of a buy-back clause by Manchester United ensures that the final chapter of his association with the club may not yet be written.
