Chelsea’s Summer Moves: A Flurry of New Signings and Potential Departures
Chelsea has been characteristically active in the transfer market this summer, bringing in six new players: Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Omari Kellyman, Renato Veiga, Caleb Wiley, Marc Guiu, and Tosin Adarabioyo. While Dewsbury-Hall and Adarabioyo are likely to join the first team, the other recruits are expected to link up with the youth teams or Ligue 1 club Strasbourg, which Chelsea’s owners incorporated into their multi-club structure in 2023. Despite not spending as extravagantly as in previous seasons, Chelsea has still invested nearly £100 million in new talent. With the transfer window still open, there is potential for more additions.
Palmer Departure Rumors
One of the most concerning scenarios for Chelsea fans would be the departure of Cole Palmer. The young winger, acquired from Manchester City for £42.5 million last year, had an outstanding season, scoring 22 goals and providing 11 assists in 33 Premier League matches. Losing Palmer would be catastrophic for Enzo Maresca’s side. Although no club has shown interest in the 22-year-old, whose contract runs until 2030, any potential exit would be a significant loss, comparable to Eden Hazard’s move to Real Madrid in 2019. More likely, however, is a new contract with better terms to reflect Palmer’s importance to the team.
Potential Collapse of Jonathan David Deal
Chelsea has a unique opportunity to sign Jonathan David from Lille at a bargain price of £17-£20 million. With inconsistent performances from Nicolas Jackson and injuries to Christopher Nkunku, David’s consistent goal-scoring ability could fill a crucial gap. The Canadian forward scored 26 goals and provided nine assists in 47 appearances for Lille last season. However, Chelsea faces competition from Tottenham, Arsenal, West Ham, and Manchester United. Maresca’s side must act quickly to secure David’s signature and avoid disappointment.

Lukaku’s Uncertain Future
Romelu Lukaku’s return to Chelsea has been anything but smooth, with the club struggling to offload the forward they bought from Inter Milan for £97.5 million in 2021. Recently, a move to Napoli seemed likely, where he would reunite with Antonio Conte. However, Lukaku’s £325,000-per-week wages have proven to be a stumbling block. If Napoli cannot meet these demands and Chelsea fails to find another buyer, Lukaku will remain a significant financial burden on the club.
Overcrowded Squad Issues
Chelsea’s large squad could become a problem for Maresca, as it did for previous manager Graham Potter. Mauricio Pochettino also faced difficulties managing a bloated squad due to an injury crisis last season. Currently, Chelsea has an excessive number of players in central defense and midfield, with six central defenders and nine midfielders vying for limited starting spots. Reports during Potter’s tenure indicated severe overcrowding, with players like Mykhailo Mudryk having to change in the corridor. To avoid a repeat of last season’s issues and improve on their sixth-place finish, Chelsea must streamline their squad before the transfer window closes.
