Griezmann Retires From International Football

Antoine Griezmann, Atletico Madrid’s prolific forward and World Cup winner with France, has announced his retirement from international football. The 33-year-old Frenchman shared a heartfelt video message on his social media account on Monday, stating it was “time for me to turn the page and make way for the next generation.”

Griezmann’s illustrious international career spanned a decade, with his debut in March 2014. He earned 137 caps and scored 44 goals, cementing his place as one of France’s all-time greats. The pinnacle of his international success came at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where Les Bleus claimed their second world title.

“Today, it is with a heavy heart that I announce my retirement from the French national team,” Griezmann said in an online video.

“After 10 incredible years marked by challenges, successes and unforgettable moments, it is time for me to turn the page and make way for the new generation. Wearing this jersey was an honour and a privilege. Since March 2014 and until last September, I had the opportunity to experience incredible moments alongside exceptional teammates. We shared victories that will remain forever engraved in our memories.”

Griezmann’s breakout tournament was Euro 2016, where he won the Golden Boot with six goals. Although France suffered a heartbreaking defeat to Portugal in the final, Griezmann’s performances propelled him to international stardom.

Two years later, Griezmann played a pivotal role in France’s World Cup triumph, scoring crucial goals and providing assists throughout the tournament. His penalty strike and two assists in the 4-2 victory over Croatia in the final sealed France’s second world title.

In recent years, Griezmann adapted his role, playing deeper in midfield alongside Kylian Mbappe. His stellar displays at the 2022 World Cup helped France reach back-to-back finals, ultimately falling to Argentina in a penalty shoot-out.

Griezmann’s legacy places him fourth on France’s all-time scorer list, and only Hugo Lloris and Lilian Thuram having made more appearances. His retirement marks the end of an era, but paves the way for the next generation of French talent.

Griezmann’s announcement has sparked tributes from fans, teammates, and the football community, celebrating his remarkable contributions to French football.
