Substitute Harry Maguire salvaged a point for 10-man Manchester United in a frustrating 3-3 draw against Porto in the UEFA Europa League.
Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund had put Manchester United ahead, but Porto fought back through Pepe and Samu Omorodion’s double. Manchester United’s captain Bruno Fernandes then got a red card, which compounded the woes for United, only for Maguire to head home Christian Eriksen’s corner in the 91st minute.
Erik ten Hag’s side have now conceded three goals away from home in consecutive European games. Despite Rashford’s early dominance, United’s defence crumbled, allowing Omorodion to capitalise.
Samu Omorodion, the 20-year-old Porto striker impressed with two goals, showcasing his striker’s instinct and positional awareness. Omorodion troubled Manchester United’s defence throughout the game, particularly Matthijs de Ligt, and proved decisive in the match.
Samu was linked with a transfer to Chelsea in the summer, but the deal broke down and never materialised.
Ten Hag’s job as Manchester United’s manager now remains under scrutiny as United’s defensive vulnerabilities persist. Manchester United have won just one of their last ten games in European competitions. The team had recorded five defeats, four draws and one win (vs Copenhagen at home) under Erik ten Hag.
Manchester United will now play Aston Villa next this weekend in the Premier League.
