Real Madrid have initiated a search for a new right-back following Dani Carvajal’s serious injury, sources have revealed to ESPN. The LaLiga giants are aware that securing the ideal candidate in the January transfer window will be challenging.
Carvajal suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament, external collateral ligament, and popliteus tendon in his right leg during Madrid’s 2-0 victory over Villarreal on Saturday. The Spain international requires surgery, leaving Lucas Vázquez as the club’s sole senior option at right-back.
A source disclosed that Madrid have been offered over 10 players since Carvajal’s injury, but the most desirable candidates are tied to contracts at other clubs. The club have been monitoring Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose contract expires next summer.
However, negotiating a mid-season deal for Alexander-Arnold would be complicated. Madrid are exploring alternative options, having missed out on centre-back Leny Yoro last summer. Coach Carlo Ancelotti is eager to strengthen the defence.
Madrid’s defensive options are limited, with Éder Militão and Antonio Rüdiger as the first-choice central defensive pairing. David Alaba continues his recovery from a long-term injury, leaving Ancelotti with midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni or Jesús Vallejo as alternatives.
Vázquez is also a reliable, experienced deputy, but sources said there are doubts at the club about his ability to deliver at right-back as the regular starter. Ferland Mendy is also a first choice, supported by Fran García.
The club are also interested in Canada international Alphonso Davies, but securing an early transfer from Bayern Munich would be difficult.
