Real Madrid are firmly backing their star forward Kylian Mbappe, despite reports linking him to an alleged rape investigation in Sweden. The 25-year-old French international has vehemently denied the allegations, calling them “fake news” on social media.
According to Swedish authorities, an official complaint was filed regarding a suspected rape at a hotel in Stockholm where Mbappe was staying last week. Local media outlets have identified Mbappe as the suspect, but Swedish prosecutors have yet to confirm his involvement.
Mbappe’s lawyer, Marie-Alix Canu-Bernard, expressed her client’s shock and dismay at the allegations, stating that he is “at ease” because “he has done nothing wrong”. The lawyer also revealed plans to file a complaint for libel against those spreading the accusations.
Real Madrid have come out in support of their player, with an internal source describing the allegations as “the biggest fake in the history of sport”. The club has also clarified that Mbappe’s removal from a promotional image for Adidas was due to his sponsorship deal with Nike, not the ongoing investigation.
Mbappe will look to put the controversy behind him as Real Madrid face Celta Vigo in La Liga action on Saturday, followed by a Champions League match against Borussia Dortmund.
