Ruud van Nistelrooy made a triumphant debut as Manchester United’s interim manager, guiding the team to a resounding 5-2 victory over Leicester City in the Carabao Cup. However, the Dutchman was quick to downplay his role in the win, attributing United’s success to a dash of luck.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Van Nistelrooy said, “I have to say we had some luck as well… Five goals, but the chances against West Ham and Fenerbahce, we created so much and couldn’t finish. All of a sudden we had some luck on our side and that made it a great night.”
The Red Devils’ attacking prowess was on full display at Old Trafford, with Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes scoring twice, and Alejandro Garnacho adding another. The win propelled United into the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.
Van Nistelrooy, who took the reins following Erik ten Hag’s sacking, praised his players for their reaction to Leicester’s goals, saying, “The reaction of players after the Leicester goals were excellent and they deserve the credit.”
Despite the impressive victory, Van Nistelrooy’s tenure as interim manager is expected to be short-lived, with Sporting CP’s Ruben Amorim poised to take over. However, with talks still ongoing, Van Nistelrooy is likely to remain in charge for United’s Premier League clash against Chelsea on Sunday.
United’s next fixtures include a trip to Ipswich on November 2, followed by the highly anticipated match against Chelsea at Old Trafford. With momentum building, Van Nistelrooy will aim to maintain the team’s winning spirit until Amorim’s anticipated arrival.
