Bayern Munich edged out Benfica 1-0 in the Champions League on Wednesday, thanks to a timely intervention from Jamal Musiala. The young forward scored the decisive goal in the 67th minute, heading home from a Harry Kane assist to hand Vincent Kompany’s side a crucial victory.
Bayern, reeling from consecutive defeats to Aston Villa and Barcelona, were in desperate need of a win. However, they struggled to find fluidity in the first half, with Benfica content to absorb pressure and counter-attack. The Portuguese side’s full-backs, Issa Kabore and Alvaro Carreras, effectively nullified Bayern’s width.
The introduction of Leroy Sane at half-time injected much-needed impetus into Bayern’s attack. Sane’s cross from the right flank found Kane, who cleverly headed the ball across goal for Musiala to nod home unmarked.
The win propelled Bayern to 17th spot in the Champions League standings, above Real Madrid. Musiala’s match-winning performance will only intensify speculation surrounding his future, with Manchester City and Real Madrid reportedly interested.
Benfica manager Bruno Lage’s defensive strategy ultimately came undone, as his side struggled to resist Bayern’s relentless pressure in the second half. The loss leaves Benfica ruing missed opportunities.
Bayern now turn their attention to Saturday’s Bundesliga fixture against St. Pauli, before the international break.
