In a stunning turn of events, Atlanta United knocked Inter Miami out of the 2024 MLS Playoffs, eliminating Lionel Messi and co. in the first round. The Five Stripes secured a thrilling 3-2 victory at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on Saturday evening.
Jamal Thiare’s first-half brace and Bartosz Slisz’s late winner in the 76th minute propelled Atlanta into the Eastern Conference Semifinals, where they will face Orlando City. Despite Messi’s remarkable header, Inter Miami’s season came to an abrupt end, defying expectations as the regular season champions and MLS Supporters’ Shield winners.
The match began with Atlanta dominating possession, and Thiare’s close-range attempt hitting the post in the 14th minute. However, Miami swiftly countered, with Matias Rojas opening the scoring. Atlanta equalised two minutes later through Thiare, who then doubled his tally to give the visitors a 2-1 lead.
Miami thought they had levelled in the 27th minute, but Diego Gomez’s goal was ruled offside. After the break, Messi’s smashing header drew Miami level at 2-2 in the 65th minute. However, Atlanta sealed the win with a brilliant counter-attack, culminating in Slisz’s decisive header.
Despite a frantic final push, Miami couldn’t overcome the deficit. Atlanta’s historic upset sent shockwaves through the MLS, ending Messi’s maiden playoff campaign in devastating fashion. The Argentine legend, alongside fellow ex-Barcelona stars Luis Suarez, Jordi Alba, and Sergio Busquets, bowed out of the competition in stunning fashion.
