Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong was reduced to tears in the dressing room on Sunday after being forced off at half-time during his side’s clash with Real Sociedad.
The Dutch international, who only returned to action in October following a five-month ankle injury layoff, suffered knocks to his shin and ankle. De Jong’s emotional response was sparked by fears of another lengthy spell on the sidelines.
Fortunately, scans revealed the 27-year-old had only suffered a blow to his shin, and he has since joined the Netherlands squad for their Nations League fixtures against Hungary and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
“It’s been a long time playing for the Dutch national team,” De Jong said upon linking up with the squad. “I’m always happy to be here. I’m a bit sore, but I think it’ll be fine.”
De Jong has struggled with injuries, missing 14 months of international football and the European Championship. However, he’s optimistic about his progress: “Things are getting better now. I am growing back to where I need to be in terms of form and fitness.”
With the Netherlands sitting second in their Nations League group and Barcelona leading La Liga under Hansi Flick, De Jong will be eager to maintain his fitness and make an impact for both club and country.
