Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp considered signing Ajax winger Antony to replace Mohamed Salah in 2022, before the Egyptian forward signed a new contract.
Salah’s future at Anfield was uncertain in early 2022, with negotiations over a renewal agreement struggling to make progress. However, on 1 July 2022, Salah penned a three-year deal, committing himself to Liverpool until 2025.
According to The Times, Klopp discussed bringing Antony to Liverpool with the club’s recruitment team as a potential replacement for Salah. Instead, Antony completed an £85m transfer to Manchester United.
The move has proven to be a major flop, with Antony managing just 17 goal contributions in 87 appearances for the Red Devils.
In contrast, Salah has maintained his world-class standards, further cementing his status as an Anfield hero.
With Salah’s contract set to expire in 2025, speculation surrounding his future is mounting. Reports suggest he may consider a lucrative move to the Saudi Pro League.
Meanwhile, Liverpool have made a strong start to the post-Klopp era under new manager Arne Slot, topping the Premier League and Champions League tables.
