Bayern Munich have gained ground in the highly contested race to sign Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Florian Wirtz, with reports suggesting they are poised to outmanoeuvre Real Madrid.
According to Bild, the Bundesliga giants have spent months crafting a strategy to lure the 20-year-old German international to Allianz Arena. Wirtz’s contract with Leverkusen expires in 2026, but Bayern are prepared to make a ÂŁ90m offer.
Bayern’s interest in Wirtz dates back to 2021, when Hansi Flick was manager. After Leverkusen rejected their advances last summer, Bayern have reignited their pursuit, holding multiple meetings with Wirtz’s father.
A key factor in Bayern’s favour is the presence of Jamal Musiala, Wirtz’s Germany teammate and close friend. Their on-field chemistry and off-field bond could prove decisive in Wirtz’s decision.
However, Real Madrid remain in contention, particularly if Xabi Alonso succeeds Carlo Ancelotti as manager. Wirtz has thrived under Alonso at Leverkusen, and the prospect of reunifying with his former coach could yet sway his decision.
Wirtz recently impressed for Germany, scoring two goals and providing an assist against Bosnia and Herzegovina. He returns to club action on Saturday, November 23, as Leverkusen face Heidenheim in the Bundesliga.
