Ruud van Nistelrooy, the former Manchester United striker, is reportedly in consideration for two managerial vacancies just days after leaving his Old Trafford post. The Dutchman, who took charge of United as interim boss following Erik ten Hag’s sacking, is said to be in the running for the top job at Hamburg in Bundesliga 2 and Leicester City in the Premier League.
According to journalist Florian Plettenberg, Hamburg are considering appointing Van Nistelrooy as their next head coach, following the sacking of Steffen Baumgart this weekend. The 48-year-old, who spent one season at Hamburg as a player, has been “discussed internally” by the German club.
Meanwhile, journalist Rudy Galetti claims that Leicester City have also approached Van Nistelrooy, following the sacking of Steve Cooper on Sunday. The Foxes are said to be looking for a new manager to turn their season around, with the club currently sitting 16th in the Premier League, just a point away from the relegation zone.
Van Nistelrooy’s brief tenure as United’s interim boss saw him win three matches and draw one, including two victories over Leicester. He also had a stint as PSV Eindhoven boss between May 2022 and May 2023, winning the KNVB Cup.
The Dutchman is likely to find out whether he will be offered the Leicester or Hamburg job this week, with both clubs desperate to make quick appointments. Hamburg, who are currently eighth in Bundesliga 2, will be looking to Van Nistelrooy to help them mount a promotion push, while Leicester will be hoping he can help them avoid relegation from the Premier League.
