Bruno Fernandes has opened up about the emotional turmoil he experienced when his proposed move to Tottenham Hotspur from Sporting CP collapsed in the summer of 2019. The Portuguese midfielder had agreed to join Spurs, but the deal fell through due to disagreements over the structure of the transfer.
According to reports, Fernandes was left in tears in his chairman’s office after learning that the move had collapsed. The midfielder had been excited about the prospect of joining Spurs and playing in the Premier League, and the collapse of the deal was a devastating blow.
Six months later, Fernandes would go on to join Manchester United, where he has become one of the league’s top players. In contrast, Spurs have been left to rue their failure to secure Fernandes’ signature, with the midfielder going on to win the Carabao and FA Cup with United.
Fernandes has spoken publicly about the disappointment he felt when the Spurs deal collapsed. In an interview with the Players’ Tribune, he recalled: “The previous summer, there were some rumours about Premier League clubs being interested in me, but the only thing that was concrete was Tottenham… In the end, the clubs couldn’t reach an agreement, and the deal fell apart.”
The collapse of the deal has been a source of regret for Spurs fans, who can only imagine how different things might have been if Fernandes had joined the club. With the midfielder now a key player for United, Spurs will be hoping to avoid another painful reminder of what might have been when the two teams meet in the future.
Fernandes will be looking to bounce back from United’s disappointing 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday, as the Red Devils aim to get their season back on track.
