Former Chelsea defender William Gallas believes Chelsea midfielder Cole Palmer may seek a move to Barcelona if the Blues fail to win silverware this season.
Gallas, who won the Premier League and League Cup with Chelsea, thinks Palmer’s ambition and desire for trophies may lead him to consider leaving Stamford Bridge.
Gallas said: “Cole Palmer might want to leave Chelsea in the future if they don’t show they can win trophies, but where would he go? Barcelona would be a great move for him, but they have great young players already like Lamine Yamal and might also be signing Nico Williams.
“Palmer looks like he is going to have a very similar season to last year and even though he is young, it will be tough to see his friends winning trophies if he isn’t at Chelsea despite the way he is playing. I won’t be surprised if he wants to speak to Chelsea in the summer if they again fail to win a trophy. He will want to know clearly what their targets are.”
Palmer, 22, has been in scintillating form, scoring 11 goals in seven games for Chelsea. His impressive displays have sparked speculation about his future, with Gallas suggesting the midfielder may grow restless if Chelsea fails to deliver trophies.
However, Palmer’s lengthy contract, which runs until 2033, makes a potential move to Barcelona unlikely unless the Catalan giants table a substantial bid.
Palmer will return to Chelsea this week after international duty with England and will focus on the Blues’ upcoming clash against Liverpool at Anfield next Sunday.
