19 Premier League Team Backs VAR Despite Criticisms

Premier League clubs have voted overwhelmingly, 19-1, to retain video assistant referees (VAR) for the next season. This decision comes despite recent criticisms from Hatters boss Rob Edwards, who stated he would “bin” the system if given the choice.

Wolverhampton Wanderers triggered the vote for the 2024-25 campaign, citing VAR’s negative impact on fan relations and the Premier League brand. They argued that the minor increase in accuracy does not justify the disruption to the spirit of the game.

Luton Town’s Rob Edwards echoed these sentiments, advocating for VAR’s use solely for offside decisions and criticizing its current format for disrupting the flow of the game. His view was shared by many fans on social media, who expressed frustration over delayed goal celebrations and inconsistent rulings.

Despite the criticism, the Premier League aims to improve VAR by introducing semi-automated offside technology and enhancing in-stadium communication. Wolves, though disappointed with the vote’s outcome, acknowledged the league’s commitment to refining the system and enhancing the matchday experience for fans.
