Lazio’s Pursuit of Mason Greenwood: A Transfer Saga Unfolds

Lazio president Claudio Lotito has confirmed a renewed bid of £21 million for Manchester United’s Mason Greenwood, which includes a 50% sell-on clause for United. Despite this offer, United have already agreed to a £26.7 million deal with Marseille, pending personal terms.

Greenwood’s Background and Recent Career

Greenwood faced legal issues in January 2022 regarding sexual assault charges, which were later dropped in February 2023. Despite denying the allegations, Manchester United announced in August that Greenwood, now 22, would seek to continue his career elsewhere. A successful loan spell at Granada, where he scored 10 goals last season, has heightened interest from European clubs, including Lazio.

Lotito’s Comments and Italian Competition

In an interview with Italian outlet Il Messaggero, Lotito accused Italian rivals Juventus and Napoli of trying to disrupt Lazio’s bid for Greenwood: “I offered 25 million euros plus 50% of the resale, plus bonuses and commissions.” He expressed frustration over external interference potentially scuttling the deal.

Marseille’s Involvement and Public Backlash

Meanwhile, Marseille’s bid for Greenwood includes a 40% sell-on fee and additional £3.4 million in add-ons, contingent on reaching personal terms. However, Marseille mayor Benoit Payan and disgruntled fans have voiced opposition to the potential transfer, labeling it “unacceptable.”

Manager Roberto De Zerbi’s Perspective

New Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi addressed the ongoing situation in his first press conference, praising Greenwood’s talent while emphasizing that the deal is not finalized: “Greenwood isn’t recruited yet, so there isn’t much to say. He’s a champion, an international-level player.”

Uncertainty and Lazio’s Ultimatum

Reports suggest that Lazio may withdraw their interest in Greenwood if an agreement with Manchester United isn’t reached soon, citing frustration over the lack of clarity. The club awaits responses from United and Greenwood’s representatives amidst the ongoing transfer drama.
