Gareth Southgate has provided an optimistic update on Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw’s recovery, stating that the Manchester United duo are “progressing well” from their injuries. Both players are racing against time to be fit for Euro 2024, having been included in England’s provisional 33-man squad, which will be trimmed to 26 before the tournament in Germany.
Maguire has been sidelined since April 27 due to a muscular problem, missing Manchester United’s final five matches of the 2023/24 season. Shaw, the only natural left-back in the squad, has endured an injury-plagued campaign with just 15 appearances, his last being in mid-February. Despite their setbacks, both players joined the England squad early to work on their fitness.
Southgate confirmed that neither Maguire, Shaw, nor Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon would participate in Monday night’s friendly against Bosnia and Herzegovina at St James’ Park. However, he expressed hope for their quick recovery, particularly for Shaw. “We’re pleased with how he’s progressing. There’s still a bit to do before he can get on the pitch in a game situation,” Southgate said.
John Stones and Bukayo Saka will also miss Monday’s game as they are on different training regimes. Additionally, Kyle Walker, Kobbie Mainoo, Phil Foden, and Jude Bellingham have yet to join the group. England’s Euro 2024 journey kicks off against Serbia on June 16, followed by group matches against Denmark and Slovenia.
