Mason Greenwood’s four-game dry spell is over, courtesy of a sensational display in Marseille’s 5-0 Ligue 1 rout of Montpellier on Sunday.
The England international, who had not scored since early September, broke his goalless duck in style, assisting Marseille’s third goal before netting their fourth past Benjamin Lecomte.
Greenwood’s stint at Marseille began promisingly, but he had struggled to find the back of the net in recent weeks. However, Sunday’s performance signalled a return to form for the former Manchester United forward.
Marseille boss Roberto De Zerbi will be delighted with Greenwood’s contribution, which helped his side climb to third in the Ligue 1 standings.
The heavy defeat proved costly for Montpellier coach Michel Der Zakarian, who was sacked by president Laurent Nicollin following the match.
Nicollin announced, “Just to tell you that I have terminated Michel De Zakarian’s contract,” he said. “He is no longer the coach of Montpellier. Given the performance and the attitude that I saw this evening, I felt obliged to intervene and end our collaboration. It is not with a light heart, because he is someone that I appreciate enormously. But in life, it is the club before everything. There is nothing planned for the future at the moment. Nothing was anticipated. I am ashamed to have taken a 5-0 loss against Marseille, for my club and my supporters.”
Greenwood and Marseille face a stern test next, hosting table-toppers Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday, October 27.
