The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has sanctioned Libya, awarding Nigeria a 3-0 forfeit victory in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
Nigeria’s Super Eagles boycotted the fixture in October, accusing Libya of mistreatment, including a 15-hour delay at Al Abraq Airport. The Nigeria Football Federation filed a complaint, prompting CAF’s disciplinary action.
CAF’s statement read: “The Libya Football Federation breached Article 31 of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Regulations and Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code.”
Libya forfeits match 87, losing 3-0., Libya Football Federation fined $50,000., and fine payable within 60 days.
William Troost-Ekong celebrated on social media: “Justice: Caf awards three points and three goals to Nigeria. Libya fined $50,000.”
Nigeria tops the group with four points, while Libya remains at the bottom with one point.
Libya’s chances of qualifying for Afcon 2025 are dwindling, and it remains to be seen if they will appeal CAF’s decision.
