Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering a hamstring injury during the Blues’ 3-0 win over Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge.
The French centre-back, who has been in impressive form this season, was forced off in the 60th minute and replaced by Benoit Badiashile. Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has since confirmed the severity of the injury, revealing that Fofana may not return to action this year.
“It’s bad news,” Maresca said in his post-match press conference. “He has a muscular problem. It looks like it’s his hamstring. These (injuries) usually require at least three, four or five weeks out… It’s a big loss.”
Fofana will undergo further tests to determine the full extent of the injury, but Maresca’s initial prognosis suggests that the 22-year-old’s year may be over.
The injury is a significant blow to Chelsea, who have been in impressive form in recent weeks. The Blues will be hoping that Fofana can make a speedy recovery and return to action as soon as possible.
Chelsea’s next match is against Southampton on December 4, and it remains to be seen how Maresca will choose to replace Fofana in the starting line-up.
