Bruno Fernandes Praises Tom Heaton Inclusion in England’s Euro Squad

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has extended his congratulations to teammate Tom Heaton, who has been included in England’s squad for the European Championship in Germany this summer.

The Football Association (FA) announced on Monday that Heaton will join the squad as a training goalkeeper, providing support and guidance for Jordan Pickford, Aaron Ramsdale, and former United goalkeeper Dean Henderson.

England manager Gareth Southgate named his 26-man squad for the tournament last week, omitting James Trafford from his plans. The Burnley shot-stopper was originally included in the provisional 33-man squad but was later cut. Heaton, 38, is in discussions with Manchester United about a new contract and has earned three senior caps for England, last featuring in a 3-2 defeat to France in June 2017. His recent inclusion in the squad, though in a non-playing capacity, will see him bring valuable experience to the team.

Southgate expressed his delight at Heaton’s involvement, stating, “I am really pleased Tom has agreed to join us in Germany. Experience tells us that a tournament can put a lot of demand on our goalkeeping group led by Martyn Margetson. Tom will play an invaluable role on the training pitch supporting Jordan, Aaron, and Dean. Off the field, as someone we all know well, he will add to the positive environment we are always looking to create. We are grateful to Manchester United for their support in making this happen.”

Heaton, who last played for United in February 2023 during their Carabao Cup semi-final triumph over Nottingham Forest, expressed his pride on Instagram. “Incredibly honoured to be asked by Gareth to join the squad. To get the call to go to a major tournament, to help in any way I can and pass on my experience is a proud moment. We have a great squad, I’m excited and can’t wait to join the group,” Heaton wrote.

Fernandes responded to Heaton’s post, commenting, “Great leaders are always welcome in any place. Congratulations, big man.” This sentiment underscores the high regard in which Heaton is held within the United dressing room. Despite not making a single appearance in the most recent campaign, his leadership and character remain invaluable to the squad.

A lifelong United supporter, Heaton is open to assuming a coaching role at the club after his playing career. However, his ongoing contract talks with United indicate he has no plans to retire soon. Fernandes’ praise highlights the importance of Heaton’s presence within the team, and his support for a new contract agreement emphasizes the positive impact of having experienced and strong personalities in the squad.
