England’s Euro 2020 Squad Hit Hard: Maguire Injured, Grealish Dropped

Gareth Southgate will be missing one of his most reliable players as England heads into Euro 2020. Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire has not recovered from a calf injury sustained in April and will not be able to participate, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein. Additionally, Manchester City winger Jack Grealish has been dropped from the squad.
Maguire, 31, has been a cornerstone for Southgate over the last three international tournaments, boasting 63 senior appearances since his debut in 2017. Despite a strong season at Old Trafford, his injury prevents him from joining the team in Germany. Grealish, 28, who was instrumental in England’s journey to the Euro 2020 Final and participated in the 2022 World Cup, also misses out following a lackluster season with only three goals in 36 appearances for Manchester City.
Alongside Maguire and Grealish, Tottenham Hotspur midfielder James Maddison, Liverpool’s Curtis Jones and Jarell Quansah, and Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford have also been cut from the initial 33-man squad. This leaves Southgate with one more decision to make before the final roster deadline on Friday.
England’s campaign kicks off on June 16 against Serbia, and Southgate will have to adapt quickly to these significant changes in his lineup. The absence of such key players will undoubtedly challenge the team’s depth and strategy as they aim for success in the tournament.
