La Liga President Javier Tebas: I am glad Barcelona didn’t sign Nico Williams

The president of La Liga, Javier Tebas, has expressed his satisfaction that Barcelona was unable to sign Nico Williams, their top summer transfer target.

The football administrator for the Spanish League said that he was pleased with Nico Williams’ decision to stay with Athletic Club because it would maintain competition and balance in the league.

Tebas said Barcelona wanted him, and it wasn’t possible. I’m very happy that he’s still at Athletic. I like that they stay at clubs that aren’t one of the big two. It gives them that sense of belonging that some have for their clubs.

I only said that if Barcelona reached the 1:1 rule, they could bring in a player of the value of Nico Williams, nothing more.

Williams declined Barcelona’s approach, choosing instead to stay with Athletic Club through the summer. Finally, they agreed on Dani Olmo of Leipzig, who is turning out to be a good signing thus far.

The Ghanaian international, who was born in Spain, was the focus of much wild speculation during the summer, as Barcelona wanted to get him back together with his outstanding Euro 2024 teammate Lamine Yamal.

Deco, the club’s sporting director, recently gave an explanation of why they chose not to sign Nico, stating that they had adequate coverage for the position.

Tebas, the league’s administrative head, expressed his satisfaction with the way the events transpired after the transfer window closed.

Speaking about Barcelona’s financial situation, La Liga’s president admitted that there was still much to be done.

Tebas said, “In terms of the economy, they have reduced the wage bill and made some very important efforts.”

“They are increasingly getting to know how Financial Fair Play works. They still have a long way to go to fix everything, but a club with that level of turnover that reduces expenses is on the right track.”
