Lionel Messi’s team, Inter Miami CF took a significant step towards setting the MLS record for points in a season, courtesy of Leonardo Campana’s dramatic 93rd-minute winner against Toronto FC at BMO Field.
The 1-0 victory keeps Miami on track to surpass the New England Revolution’s 72-point tally, set in 2021. With the Supporters’ Shield already secured, the Inter Miami side can achieve the feat in their regular-season finale against the Revolution on 19 October.
The match began with a subdued tone, lacking clear-cut chances. Inter Miami boss Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino introduced Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets midway through the second half, seeking to break the deadlock. Toronto FC responded by bringing on Lorenzo Insigne.
The decisive moment arrived in the 93rd minute, as Luis Suarez’s clever assist found Campana, who seized his opportunity with a clinical finish.
The defeat leaves Toronto FC’s postseason aspirations hanging by a thread. With D.C. United and the Philadelphia Union still to play, TFC’s fate is no longer in their hands. A win or draw for either side would mathematically eliminate Greg Vanney’s team.
