Newly appointed England head coach Thomas Tuchel has shared a heartfelt video message with fans, expressing his excitement and nervousness about leading the Three Lions.
The German coach, who signed an 18-month deal with the Football Association, will take charge of the team from 1 January 2025. His contract runs until the end of the 2026 World Cup, to be held in the USA, Mexico, and Canada.
Tuchel, formerly of Chelsea and Bayern Munich, acknowledged his nerves in the video message, saying: “Hi guys, Thomas here. Quite a bit nervous, it’s my first message as the English head coach. I’m at Wembley, where else? And there’s also reason to be a bit nervous. I think that’s a good thing.
“I can promise you I’m very excited. I’m very honoured and I will do everything to ensure that we can qualify for the World Cup first of all, and then we have a successful World Cup, try to get a second star on our shirt. All the best and see you soon in the stadium.”
Tuchel’s appointment has drawn criticism from former Tottenham coach Harry Redknapp, who questioned the FA’s decision to choose a foreign coach over an English candidate.
Before Tuchel’s tenure begins, interim coach Lee Carsley will manage England for two more Nations League matches against Greece and Ireland on 14 and 17 November, respectively.
