FC Barcelona has publicly poked fun at arch-rivals Real Madrid following their abrupt boycott of the 2024 Ballon d’Or ceremony.
Manchester City midfielder Rodri took home the prestigious award, surpassing Real Madrid favourite Vinicius Junior. Meanwhile, Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal won the Kopa Trophy.
Barcelona’s social media team posted a sarcastic thank-you note to the Ballon d’Or. “We are truly honoured to be here. Thank you, Ballon d’Or, for such a warm and gracious welcome,” subtly mocking Real Madrid’s decision. The post has sparked lively debate among football fans.
Real Madrid had been tipped to dominate the awards but opted out upon learning Rodri would win. Their absence was noticeable amidst the glamour of the Paris ceremony.
Barcelona will now shift focus to their upcoming La Liga match against Espanyol on November 3, while Real Madrid prepares to face Valencia on November 2.
