Liverpool capitalised on defeats for Arsenal and Manchester City to reclaim top spot in the Premier League, with manager Arne Slot hailing the triumph as “special”.
Arsenal’s 1-0 loss to Newcastle United and Manchester City’s shock defeat to Bournemouth paved the way for Liverpool’s ascent. The Reds came from behind to beat Brighton 2-1 at Anfield, courtesy of Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah’s quickfire goals.
Slot’s tactical masterstroke, switching to an offensive 4-2-4 formation, paid dividends as Liverpool overturned Ferdi Kadioglu’s opener. Reflecting on the victory, Slot told BBC Match of the Day: “It feels special because we faced Arsenal last week… Today we saw the same quality from City. Facing two top teams in quick succession, we had to come from behind in both matches to secure results.”
Liverpool’s record-breaking start under Slot continues to impress, with eight wins from their first ten Premier League games. The Reds now turn their attention to the Champions League, hosting Bayer Leverkusen and former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso at Anfield.
The high-stakes encounter promises to be an emotional reunion for Alonso, and Liverpool will seek to maintain their momentum in both domestic and European competitions.
