Luis Diaz’s stunning second-half hat-trick propelled Liverpool to a resounding 4-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen at Anfield on Wednesday, maintaining their perfect Champions League record.
Xabi Alonso’s return to his former stomping ground ended in disappointment as his Leverkusen side struggled to contain the Reds’ attacking prowess. A relatively subdued first half gave way to a thrilling Liverpool display, with two goals in as many minutes turning the tide.
Curtis Jones sparked the onslaught, delivering a pinpoint pass for Diaz to expertly dink over Lukas Hradecky. Mohamed Salah then provided the ammunition for Cody Gakpo’s powerful header, doubling Liverpool’s advantage.
Diaz took centre stage in the final 10 minutes, netting twice more to seal his hat-trick and cement Liverpool’s fourth consecutive European win. The Colombian’s clinical finishing underlined the Reds’ attacking potency.
The Liverpool side continue to set the pace in the Champions League, while Alonso’s Leverkusen face an uphill battle to revive their campaign.
