Neymar Opens Up on His PSG Departure

Neymar has revealed that Paris Saint-Germain fans “crossed the line” with him and Lionel Messi, leading to a sense of “injustice” and “resentment” towards the club.

The Brazilian forward, now playing for Al-Hilal in the Saudi Pro League, reflected on his six-year stint at PSG, which ended in 2023. Neymar scored 115 goals in 186 appearances but faced increasing criticism from fans, who booed him and Messi on several occasions.

“I was very well received by the French people and supporters in my first year,” Neymar said in an interview with RMC Sport. “The last two or three years have not been the same. It was not incredible the way I was treated. I always gave my all on the pitch, but I felt injustice.”

Neymar recalled the incident where fans protested outside his home, insulting and threatening him. “For me, they crossed the line. Our relationship was no longer respectful. I have no resentment towards the club, but I was a little sad about the way I was treated by the supporters.”

The 32-year-old, who joined PSG for a world-record £200m fee in 2017, acknowledged mixed emotions about his time at the club. “I had some great moments, but also some sad moments. And my relationship with the supporters is rather part of the sad moments, unfortunately.”

Neymar praised PSG’s sporting achievements during his tenure but expressed disappointment with the treatment he received. “On a sporting level, it was the best football I’ve played. So I’m happy and I have a clear conscience about that.”

Neymar is currently recovering from a hamstring injury and is set to feature for Al-Hilal in the King Cup of Champions quarter-finals against Al-Ittihad on January 7.
