Super Eagles coach, Finidi George, has resigned from his position, just weeks into his tenure. This announcement was made by former Super Eagles media officer, Toyin Ibitoye, in a post on X.com on Saturday. Ibitoye wrote: “News just in. Finidi George #FinidiGeorge_FG has resigned from his #NGSuperEagles manager position.”
Background of the story
Following the 2-1 upsetting defeat of the Super Eagles by the Republic of Benin which left Nigeria in 5th position on the qualification table for the 2026 World Cup, there was a public outcry from various stakeholders for the sack of the coach, which culminated in the decision of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) to axe the coach and contract a foreign technical advisor to salvage what was left of Nigeria’s hopes of qualifications for the 2026 world cup.
