Victor Osimhen’s blistering form continued as the Nigerian striker scored twice to propel Galatasaray to a thrilling 3-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League on Thursday. His clinical finishing and relentless pressure proved too much for the Spurs defence, cementing his status as one of the world’s most formidable forwards.
Tottenham’s perfect start to the Europa League came to an abrupt end despite a spirited fightback. Galatasaray took the lead as early as the sixth minute through Yunus Akgun’s stunning strike from the edge of the box. However, Spurs levelled proceedings just 15 minutes later, thanks to Will Lankshear’s first senior goal for the club, expertly set up by Archie Gray and Brennan Johnson.
Galatasaray regained the lead through Osimhen’s double, either side of a disallowed goal, as the Nigerian forward proved unstoppable. Despite Fraser Forster’s valiant efforts in goal, Osimhen sealed the win with his second strike of the night.
Spurs’ woes deepened when Lankshear received his marching orders for a reckless tackle, having been booked just 10 minutes prior. However, Ange Postecoglou’s side staged a late comeback, with substitute Dominic Solanke pulling a goal back.
Tottenham momentarily took control, and Dejan Kulusevski nearly snatched a dramatic equaliser, but his long-range effort sailed wide.
Galatasaray’s Dries Mertens was instrumental in the victory, providing two assists for Osimhen, while Radu Dragusin’s struggles in the heart of the Spurs defence proved costly.
The defeat leaves Tottenham seeking redemption in their next match against Ipswich on Sunday, followed by a clash with Manchester City after the international break.
In contrast, Galatasaray will look to build on this momentum when they face Samsunspor in the Super Lig on November 10.
