Captain Morsy’s added time equalizer earns Ipswich Town dramatic draw at Southampton

Captain of Ipswich Town Sam Morsy’s goal kept Southampton from winning their first Premier League game of the year with a dramatic equalizer in injury time.

Tyler Dibling’s first goal for Southampton gave the Saints the lead after just five minutes of play. Prior to this, the team had lost all four of their top-flight matches in 2024–25.

Axel Tuanzebe of Ipswich Town lost possession of the ball inside his penalty area, and Southampton controlled the possession well. Adam Lallana, 36, found Dibling, 18, who slotted the ball past Arijanet Muric with ease.

Last Saturday, in the Saints’ 3-0 loss to Manchester United, Cameron Archer nearly doubled the lead for the team but struck the post.

After joining Saints for a reported £15 million fee from Aston Villa in the summer, Archer was looking for his first goal since then. Flynn Downes, an ex-Ipswich midfielder, played him in, but Muric made a great save.

But that error proved costly, as in the 95th minute, Morsy beat Aaron Ramsdale with a shot that deflected off the unlucky Joe Aribo.

Both teams are still without a league victory, but Ipswich—back in the top flight for the first time since 2001–02—were the happier team, celebrating as though they had won.

They moved up from 17th to 16th place with this hard-earned point—they had only lost to Manchester City and Liverpool in their previous five games.

With their first point in the top flight, Southampton moves up one spot in the standings, from 19th to 18th.

In other match news for today’s Premier League games, Liverpool defeated Bournemouth 3-0 thanks to goals from Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez. This was the ideal retaliation for their opening-round loss to Nottingham Forest last week. Ange Postecoglou’s team defeated Brentford 3-1, and Dominic Solanke scored his first goal while wearing Tottenham colors.
