AFCON 2025 Qualifiers: Boniface, Lookman, Ekong, and seven others arrive Uyo camp ahead of Benin, Rwanda clash

The Super Eagles of Nigeria will play Benin Republic and Rwanda over the course of three days, with Augustine Eguavoen, the Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), serving as interim head coach.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria, who were drawn into Group D of the AFCON 2025 qualifiers, are scheduled to play the Benin Cheetahs at Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Saturday, September 7. Three days later, they will fly to Kigali to play Rwanda’s Amavubi at the Amahoro National Stadium.

According to Footballbias, more Super Eagles players arrived at the team’s training facility in Uyo, Akwa Ibom, on Monday in preparation for their first two 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches.

Seven players arrived in Uyo early in the day, including Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, who plays for Italy, and William Troost-Ekong, the captain of the team. Wilfred Ndidi, a midfielder for Leicester City; Victor Boniface, a forward for Bayer Leverkusen; and Amas Obasogie, a former Bendel Insurance goalkeeper, joined their teammates to bring the total number of newcomers to the camp to ten. 

Stanley Nwabali, the 28-year-old goalkeeper for Chippa United, is expected to arrive at the camp on Monday, according to the Nigeria Football Federation.

Expected to report to camp before Tuesday are the remaining twelve players. Tuesday will mark the Super Eagles’ first official practice at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium’s practice field in Uyo.

The 35th edition of Africa’s international men’s football championship will take place in Morocco, and the teams competing will be chosen by the Confederation of African Football through the 2025 AFCON qualification matches. The qualification process started on March 21 and ran through March 26, culminating in group stage matches in September, October, and November of 2024. Twenty-four teams, including the hosts, Morocco, who advanced automatically, will compete in the tournament.
