Messi Struggles in Inter Miami’s Loss

Lionel Messi’s uncharacteristic struggles in front of goal proved costly as Inter Miami succumbed to a 2-1 defeat against Atlanta United in Game 2 of their First Round MLS Playoffs series at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Miami had taken the lead in controversial circumstances, with Federico Redondo appearing to interfere with Brad Guzan’s goalkick in the 39th minute. The midfielder’s presence disrupted Guzan’s delivery, allowing Hector David Martinez to score on an empty net with a soft chip.

However, Atlanta United staged a dramatic second-half comeback. Derrick Williams capitalised on poor set-piece defending to equalise, before supersub Xande Silva sealed the win with a strike that exposed Miami’s lackadaisical defence.

Messi, usually clinical in front of goal, endured a rare off-day. The Argentine legend and former Barca player missed several easy chances throughout the match, including a glaring opportunity in the 83rd minute. With space to shoot in the box, Messi uncharacteristically opted for his right foot, sending the ball sailing into the stands.

Even when he finally beat Guzan in stoppage time, Messi was denied by the offside flag. This performance marked a rare instance of Messi looking human since joining MLS.

With the series now poised at 1-1, attention turns to Miami, where Game 3 will be played. Can Inter Miami deliver on their lofty expectations and overcome this setback? Only time will tell.
