Manchester United are falling behind in the race to sign Alphonso Davies, despite Bayern Munich’s contract uncertainty. The Canadian left-back’s contract expires in June, prompting interest from several European giants, including Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester United and Liverpool.
Davies, 23, reportedly rejected Bayern’s lucrative renewal offer worth approximately £11.5 million per year until 2029 in March. However, talks have restarted between the club and his agent, leaving Bayern optimistic about retaining their prized defender. Club insiders believe Davies feels at home in Munich, where he has spent nearly seven years and is highly regarded by teammates.
Real Madrid emerged as a strong contender earlier this year, reportedly reaching a preliminary understanding with Davies’ representatives in February. However, their interest cooled, and they only resumed contact with Davies’ camp after clinching the Champions League title in June. Barcelona have also expressed interest, but their financial struggles cast doubt on their ability to make a competitive offer.
Liverpool have shown interest in Davies, but their senior management has denied pursuing a deal, making a move to Anfield appear unlikely. Manchester United’s turbulent state and lack of Champions League football make them less appealing to the Canadian international. United’s tight budget has also made signing Davies a low priority.
As the January transfer window approaches, the uncertainty surrounding Davies’ future continues. He knows the extent of Bayern’s commitment to keeping him, but whether he opts to stay in Munich or seek new challenges abroad remains to be seen. A resolution is anticipated by February, although his ultimate decision could shift as negotiations with Bayern and other interested parties evolve.
